Workshop underscores role of education as catalyst for climate action

On the 15-17 March 2017, the UN CC: Learn in collaboration with ACPC and University of Addis Ababa hosted nine country delegations in a workshop at UNECA, Addis Ababa. Lessons and practices in climate change education at national level were shared at the event, which  included strategies and policies for climate change education, integration of climate change in curricula, training and teaching materials for teachers and educators, outside the classroom: sustainable campuses and non-formal education, financing climate change education and training, and ideas to shape the next phase of UN CC: Learn programme. 

 

UN CC:Learn – The One UN Climate Change Learning Partnership – is a partnership of more than 30 multilateral organizations supporting countries to design and implement systematic, recurrent and results-oriented climate change learning. Through its engagement at the national and global levels, UN CC:Learn contributes to the implementation of Article 6 of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on training, education and public awareness-raising, and the 2012-2020 Doha Work Programme. The Secretariat for UN CC:Learn is hosted by the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). The programme has been in place since 2011, and has since worked with nine partner countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, Ghana, Indonesia, Malawi, Niger, Uganda). UN CC:Learn is also supporting a regional project that reaches out to all eight Member States of the Central American Integration System (SICA).

 

The rationale for holding the workshop is that partner countries expressed the need for more opportunities to share experiences, and also to receive more support on the subjects of (1) integrating climate change in general education and (2) mobilizing resources for implementing national learning strategies. The UN CC:Learn Secretariat thus organized an extended three-day version of the annual meeting of partner countries. In addition to the substantive exchanges on the issues of education and finance, the event provided an opportunity to discuss the main elements of the new phase of UN CC:Learn that will start in September 2017.
